9. Kîmarti plates.

These three copper-plates were lately found in the village of Kîmarti, 2 miles south-west of Narasannapåta, the head-quarters of a tālukā of the Gaãjām district, and were kindly sent to me by the Collector, Mr. C.J. Weir, I.C.S. Each of the three plates measures 7 1/2" to 7 5/8 inches by 2 1/4 to 2 3/8 inches. Their edges are not raised into rims, but the writing on them is in a state of nearly perfect preservation. The ring on which the three plates were strung, and which had not yet been cut when I received them, is about 3/8 inch thick and about 3 3/8 inches in diameter. The two ends of the ring are secured in an elliptical seal, which measures about 1 1/2 by 1 1/4 inches in diameter and bears, on a countersunk surface, in raised letters, the legend Pitð-bhaktaõ, i.e, 'he who is devoted to (his) father.' The weight of the plates is 1 to 6 oz., and that of the ring and seal 10 oz.; total, 2 lb.(E. Hultzsch)
