Notes.

L.1 For a discussion on the meaning of the expression Para-Nasaêgama see SN, Vishnukundins and their times, Ch. V, sect. iii (SN).
L.3 -pàrtthiv-îdit-îdit-ànvaya- : cf. mahaty=udit-îditå-Kàkusth-ànvayå in the Devagiri plates of the Kadamba Mðgåùavarman (IA, VII, p. 35; text lines 6-7). In the Arthaùàstra a passage reads purîhitam-udit-îdita-kula-ùèlam (p. 15) and a commentary thereon seems to explain udita etc. as 'one whose ancestors upto four generations (or seven generations) are pure by birth'. (See the Kauòilèya Arthaùàstra, K. P. Kangle Ed. pt. II. p, 19, n. 9). It is: interesting to note that from Indravarman I down to Màdhavavarman II there had been only four generations of kings known in the Viøíukuíäi family. Similarly upto Mðgåùavarman there had been seven generations of rulers in the Kadamba dynasty. However Fleet rendered udit-îdita as 'risen higher and higher' (IA, VII, p. 36) and Hultzsch took it in the sense of 'ever rising' - (EI, XII, p. 136). -tilaka-samudbhót-aikàdaù-: read tilakasy=aikàdaùa or -ànvaya-samudbhótasy=aikàdaùa, or -ànvaya-samu-dbhóta-tilakasy-aikàdaùa (SN).
L.4 snàna-puíy-îdaka-: evidently puíy-îdaka-snàna is intended. Cf. snàna-puíyîdakåøu in the Mågha., I, 1. -vaìù-àtmaj-àlaêkàra-: read -dhyàta ubhaya-. Àtmaja may be superfluous (SN).
L.7 -puíy-àbhiphala-vðddhayå : read -puíya phal-àbhivðddhayå (SN).
L.8 Màíäèrasagîtràya : Hultzsch read Màíäira-. -brahmàìày-à-: read bràhmaíày=à- (SN).
L.10 Vacana-pråøaíam may be equal to vacan=ànusðtaì pråøaíam 'rendering service according to orders'. Cf. purva-maryàdayà sàdhu pråøaíaì karttavyam in the Kanukallu plates of the Sàlaêkàyana Skandavarman (EI, XXXI, p. 9, text lines 13-14). However Hultzsch translated the passage in our record as 'perpetually perform every duty, (viz.) conveying messages (?) etc.' (EI. XII, p. 136) (SN).
L.10 For Fleet's remark on the formula àjãà svayam=åva see EI, VII, p. 183, n. 11 (SN).
L.11 bubîdhayàmi: read bîdhayàmi (SN).
L.16 saptà(pta)-viìùatikaì: cf., vatsarå sapta-triìùatkå, above Tummalagudem plates, line 13. Hultzsch corrects Jyåøòha into Jyaiøòha. But Jyåøòha also is grammatically correct. See Bhànuji Dèkshita's Vyàkhyàsudha under Nàma. I, iv, verse 16 (SN). Tasminn=åva etc. is to be rendered probably as 'To you the order is that on the same (day) (or in the same village) the delivery of the charter (must be made to the donee)'. It seems that the office copy of the charter probably contained at the end the above instruction to the officer, in 'charge of drafting or issuing the copper plate charters, ordaining him that the record must be issued to the donee on the self same day without any delay or in the same gift village. The clerk who, as pointed out by Dr. Hultzsch, copied the office copy 'in a very careless manner', (EI, XII, p. 133), included unknowingly this sentence also. Hultzsch, however, read sambîdhanàt and treating it as a separate sentence, translated the passage tasminn=åva etc. as 'in the same (year) the delivery of the edict (to the donee took place). The above (was written) under the instruction (of the king).(EI,XII, p. 136). But the reading saìbîdhana tå is beyond doubt (SN).
