The inscription is on the left-hand side wall, outside the verandah of Cave No. 21. The inscription is cut deep and distinct. It measures 1.32 cm. x 1.27 cm. Characters: Bràhmè, 2nd century A.D. (Kðiøíaùaila), the gift of the lay-worøipper (upàsaka) Aparåíu, the son of Aíada
(Ànanda), a merchant (någama) residing at Kàlayàía (Kalyàía), together with his
family, with his wife (kuäubinè) Juvàriíikà, the mother of Aíada (Ànanda), with his
son Aíada (Ànanda), with his danghters-in-law, (the wives of) Aía . . . . (Ànanda). .
. . Dhàmadåvè (Dharmadåvè), and others, to the congregation of monks (bhikhusagha) of
the four quarters. Also endowment with money and the field of a half-paía-owner
