No. 50. Kanheri Buddhist stone inscription. Prakrit.
| The inscription is on the back of a low bench along the flight of steps opposite of the Cave No.7. The pathway in question consists of a long flight of steps beginning on the side of the stream. It records the dedication of the pathway by Dhamaíaka, the goldsmith from Chemulya, the son of Rohinimitra. The Inscription measures 1.16 m. x 36 cm. Letters 5 cm. x 5 cm. Characters : Bràhmè, 2nd Century A.D. Language: Prakrit. Orthography: The letters are bold, deeply cut, medial i in the word 'chemulaka' is peculiar. The letters show the influence of the Køatrapa style (ShG). |
