INDEX OF PLACE-NAMES

This charter, obtained from either of the Godavari Districts, A.P. (the exact findspot is not known) consists of five copper plates (each measuring about 18 cm by 4.5 cm) and a copper ring with a seal that contains on its surface some figures now totally indistinct. The ring and the seal weigh 515 gm and 159 gm respectively the weight of the plates is not known. The following transcript is based on the plates of the record published in APGAS, No. 6, facing pp. 241 ff. (SN).
The copper plate grant edited here which is now preserved in the Government of Andhra Pradesh Museum, Hyderabad was obtained from the Godavari District, Andhra Pradesh. No other details regarding its findspot are available. The record has been published by Shri N. Ramesan in "Copper Plate. Inscriptions of Andhra Pradesh Government Museum, Hyderabad", [Andhra Pradesh Government Archaeological Series, No. 6, pp. 241 ff.] Volume I, with plates. This has also been copied by the Office of the Chief Epigraphist, Archaeological Survey of India, Mysore. [A. R. Ep., 1965-66, No. A 2.] It is now edited here with the kind permission of the Chief Epigraphist.
This is the second known record of Pðthivè-ùrè-Mólaràja, the first one being the, Godavari plates published by J. F. Fleet. [JBBRAS, Vol. XVI, pp. 144 ff. and plate.] The present record is important as it mentions Ràjà Harivarman as the son of Pðthivè-ùrè-Mólaràja who is referred to as Pðthivè-Mólaràja the son of Mahàràja Prabhàkara in the Godavari plates. Thus now the three generations of the family, viz., Prabhàkara, Pðthivè-ùrè-Móla and Harivarman are known to us. The fact that the grant villages mentioned in the Godavari plates [Ibid, text lines 10; 22-24.] and in the present record lay in Tàæupàka-viøaya indicates that Pðthivè-Mólaràja's territory centred round that viøaya.
The grant consists of five plates held together by a circular ring with a seal. The first plate is engraved on the inner side only. Except for the third plate, first side, and the fifth plate, second side, all plates contain four lines of writing each. Whereas the third plate, first side, has five lines, the fifth, plate, second side has only two lines of writing. Thus the plates contain 35 lines in all. (SRM)
